The Story

Bring Your Parents, Get Right In

Named after owner Jenn Shorr's mother, Joyface is a place where your parents plan a quick stop and end up sweat-drenched from dancing six hours later. Jenn used to live in the building. In 2017, she took over the space on Avenue C and spent 17 months turning it into what she'd been dreaming about — a place that only plays disco and oldies, and feels like a 70s living room basement, not a bar.

Elizabeth Ingram designed the entire interior in ten days from thrift shop finds — the waterbed, the tiger paintings, the vintage Playboy wall, the chandelier made from wired-together 70s table lamps. Architectural Digest featured it the week before opening.

"I want it to feel like someone's basement. Not like a bar."

The Drink

No printed menu. Pull a keychain from the bowl — it has a liquor and a mixer. The bartender invents a cocktail on the spot and names it after you. Or just order a martini. We won't judge.
